High cheekbones, a hallmark of beauty and handsomeness,
give the face a balanced appearance. Although assessment of the need for
cheek augmentation is a relatively subjective process, the facial plastic
surgeon is trained to assess this area in conjunction with the remainder
of the facial features. Computerized imaging is a valuable tool in demonstrating
to the patient the changes that can be accomplished with cheek augmentation.
The procedure involves a small incision inside the mouth,
just beneath the cheek. A medical-grade material is implanted during this
procedure in a size customized to the needs of the patient's face. The
implants are placed to overlie the cheek bones and are fixed into place.
The risks of cheek implantation are similar to those of chin augmentation
or reduction (see Chin Augmentation/ Reduction). Rarely, cheek implants
may shift after surgery, and a minor revision may be required to reposition
them. However, as with chin augmentation, cheek augmentation, when employed
in the appropriate setting, can add the finishing touch to the patient's
facial harmony.

Medical grade cheek implants, along with a minor revision rhinoplasty, gave this
patient a more glamorous appearance.
